APPLYING FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID IS AS EASY AS 1, 2, 3…
Determine Eligibility
The first step is to determine your eligibility to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Undocumented students should complete a Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TAFSA). Application availability and priority deadlines mimic the FAFSA.
Create an FSA ID
Create an FSA ID (Federal Student Aid ID), if needed. The FSA ID will serve as an electronic signature on your FAFSA. Whether you’re a student or parent, you’ll need to create your own acount to apply for, receive, and manage your federal student aid.
Complete the FAFSA
Financial aid eligibility is based on an applicant’s FAFSA results. The priority deadline is April 15th. See below for information needed to complete the FAFSA; be sure to gather personal documents and financial information before applying.
What you need to complete the FAFSA
→ Quick Tip: JC’s school code is 003579. You will need this code when completing the FAFSA application.
→ Select 2024-2025 Financial Aid Year: student and parent 2022 tax information will be used on the application.
LIST OF SCHOOLs YOU'RE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING
You can list up to 20 schools on the FAFSA. Even if there is only a slight chance you will apply to a school, list it on your FAFSA form in order to not miss out on financial aid opportunities. You can always remove a school later if you decide not to apply.
RECORD OF your assets
The FAFSA will ask you and your contributors questions about your assests, so make sure you have financial information such as cash, bank account balances, investment accounts, stocks, bonds, businesses, and farms for the student and the parents if the student is still a dependent.
Untaxed income information
Such as interest income, noneducation veteran benefits, and child support received for the student and the parents if the student is still a dependent.
Federal Tax Information
For students and their contributors if their student is still a dependent. Eligible students and contributors who filed a U.S. tax return with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) now have the ability to have their tax information transferred directly into the FAFSA form with the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) after providing consent.
