Reverse Transfer

If something unexpected takes you away from college prior to completion, it’s good to have an associate degree in hand for the benefit of future employment opportunities.

According to the National Student Clearinghouse Signature Report, “For students there are economic values as well as other rewards that may be attached to completing even a few college courses or terms and the ability of students to benefit from an increase in skills or competencies even without a formal credential. There are immense opportunities offered by postsecondary institutions to students of all types, even those whose optimisms and ambition may later turn out to have exceeded their determination or academic preparation.”

WHAT IS "REVERSE TRANSFER"?

Reverse transfer is for students who have already transferred to another two-year or four-year institution without having earned an associate degree at Jacksonville College. Reverse transfer allows students to transfer credits earned at other institutions back to JC. The courses taken at other institutions are reviewed by JC who determines if the combination of credits earned meet the requirements for an associate degree by completing a degree audit.

HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK?

Student:

  • Agree to participate in Reverse Transfer and release your records via National
Student Clearinghouse, or send an official transcript electronically or via mail to: Jacksonville College
    105 B.J. Albritton Drive Jacksonville, TX 75766
    Attn: Registrar (Reverse Transfer)
  • Meet eligibility requirements.
  • Earn a total of 60 credits required for an associate degree.

Jacksonville College:

  • Will evaluate your credits from other institutions by completing a degree audit and inform you if you qualify to earn an associate degree.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Eligibility, as a former Jacksonville College student, includes the following criteria:

You have completed 15 credit hours at JC;

You have completed a total of 60 credit hours or more, including coursework at both JC and other institution(s);

Your completed credit hours meet the requirements for an Associate of Arts, or Associate of Science, to be determined by a JC degree audit; and

You have not already received an associate degree.

DO I NEED TO TAKE ANY SPECIFIC COURSES AT THE INSTITUTION I’M CURRENTLY ENROLLED AT?

No, you continue the coursework needed for your degree at that institution.

DO I NEED TO RE-ENROLL IN JACKSONVILLE COLLEGE?

No, JC will utilize your credits from your other institution to determine if you qualify to earn an associate degree.

WHAT IF I LEFT JACKSONVILLE COLLEGE MANY YEARS AGO BEFORE STARTING BACK AT THE UNIVERSITY?

You are still eligible to participate.

WILL THIS AFFECT MY FINANCIAL AID OR SCHOLARSHIPS AND/OR GRANTS?

No, it will not affect your federal or state financial aid. If you are receiving a private scholarship and/or grants (e.g. business or civic organization), you should consult them for the regulations to ensure receipt of a degree does not make you ineligible.

WILL IT AFFECT MY MILITARY BENEFITS?

No, as long as you are pursuing a degree at an institution and completing coursework for that degree.

WHAT AM I AGREEING TO WHEN I CONSENT TO HAVE MY COURSE INFORMATION TRANSFERRED?

By completing the information requested, you are consenting to allow the National Student Clearinghouse to securely transfer the necessary enrollment and course-level data to JC to perform a degree audit. You are also agreeing to have the updated contact information you provide securely shared with JC so we are able to contact you regarding your Reverse Transfer.

ONCE I’VE CONSENTED TO HAVE MY COURSE INFORMATION TRANSFERRED, WHEN WILL I KNOW IF I’VE RECEIVED A DEGREE?

Once you’ve completed the consent, Jacksonville College will perform a degree audit. Performing a degree audit can take time – it may be several months before you are notified you qualify or informed of additional credits you need for an associate degree.

WHAT IF I ONLY HAVE A FEW CREDIT HOURS LEFT TO QUALIFY FOR MY ASSOCIATE DEGREE FROM JACKSONVILLE COLLEGE?

Once the degree audit is complete, you will be informed whether you are eligible for a degree, or notified of any remaining courses you must complete. This notification will also include information about next steps to complete your associate degree.

WHAT IF I ATTENDED MULTIPLE COLLEGES OUTSIDE OF MY CURRENT UNIVERSITY AND JACKSONVILLE COLLEGE?

JC will review those credits too. Coursework at other institutions you attended can be considered in your degree audit by JC. Please be sure to submit official transcripts from any institutions you attended to JC so we can review your course work to determine what can apply toward your associate degree.

WHICH ASSOCIATE DEGREE WILL BE AWARDED?

The associate degree the student is eligible for based on completed course work will be the associate degree awarded.

IF THE STUDENT’S CURRENT UNIVERSITY MAJOR IS THE SAME AS THEIR 2-YEAR COLLEGE MAJOR, DOES THAT GUARANTEE HE/SHE WILL BE AWARDED AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE?

No. Reverse Transfer requires that the lower-division institution of higher education determines when degree requirements are satisfied by cumulative credit hours for the associate degree to be awarded.

CAN I PARTICIPATE IN JACKSONVILLE COLLEGE’S GRADUATION CEREMONY?

Yes, you will be eligible to attend and participate in our May commencement ceremony. You will need to complete an application and pay the appropriate fees in order to do so.

DOES REVERSE TRANSFER COST ANYTHING?

There is no cost for sending your information and awarding of the degree, outside of the cost of sending official transcripts to JC. If you wish to receive a printed diploma or to participate in graduation ceremonies you will need to complete an application and pay the appropriate fees.
